Recent Reads – Winter Edition

Crank the heater, brew some peppermint tea and dive into some fresh sheets with a bloody good book. It’s winter time baby and what better way to get through this hellish season then to snuggle up and read? That’s where I’ll be until conditions improve and these are the books I’ve been hiding away with recently:

Everything Everything by Nicole Yoon – This novel was such an easy and enjoyable read. This young adult novel is based around 18 year old Maddy who is allergic to pretty much everything. Forced to spend her life cooped up in a home completely sealed off from the outside, Maddy creates her own world inside her house including games and movies with her mum and online education. That is until Olly moves in next door and she realizes just how much she’s been forced to give up and what she would risk to set herself free. I flew through this book and DID NOT predict that twist at the end!

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi – A non-fiction book written by a neurosurgeon turned patient after a devastating lung cancer diagnosis at the age of 36. This book tackles death, the acceptance of ones immortality, living a life with meaning, and just how hard doctors have to bust their asses in the first 10 years of their career. I knew this story would be completely heartbreaking so I tried to keep a little removed from the story so I wasn’t bawling literally the whole time. This is a thought-provoking true story you need to be prepared for.

13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher – I thought I’d get on board with the Netflix banger by first having a crack at the novel it’s based on. 13 Reasons Why starts with the suicide of high school student Katherine Langford. Two weeks after her tragic death, her classmate Clay receives a box filled with audiotapes Katherine recorded before her death. She’s asking that these tapes get passed around between 13 people, all of whom had something to do with why she ended her life. This was a quick and thrilling read that I found hard to put down. Now I’m going to marathon the shit out of the TV show!

The One Who Goy Away by Caroline Overington – I’m a sucker for a ‘who done it’ and this one is a total doozy. Mr and Mrs Wynne-Estes appear to be the perfect couple – beautiful, rich and living a blissful life with their angelic twin daughters. But when the wife, Loren, is reported missing from a cruise ship during the couple’s second honeymoon, the husband’s secrets begin to be exposed. Affairs, sex tapes, financial troubles and murder – this book had me frantically flipping pages to see what in the heeell happened to Loren!

I’ve been pretty lucky in this most recent batch of reads and really enjoyed all of them! Next on my lit list is Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty (I really enjoyed her book The Husband’s Secret so why not give her other books a look?) as well as A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara which I’ve heard will suck you into a vortex until you devour all of it’s 736 pages.

What books have you been reading under the covers this winter?

Until next time…That’s what she said.
